Monk's
Steamer Bar
The place
Monk's is a Gulf Gate dive bar where Gulf oysters get shucked fresh at the counter. Sit, watch the shucker work, order a cold beer, repeat. It's the exact opposite of the white-tablecloth seafood experience and it's better for it.
Monk's doesn't need explaining. It's a dive bar in the Gulf Gate strip mall cluster that shucks Gulf oysters fresh at the counter. The barstools are the right height. The beer is cold. The oysters are live and briny. Nothing else is required.
The counter service is intentional — you sit facing the shucker, you watch the work, you order when you're ready. Gulf oysters, maybe some boiled shrimp, maybe a grouper sandwich if you want to eat a meal rather than snack. The crowd is a mix of Gulf Gate regulars and people who drove down from downtown Sarasota specifically for this. The price point means you can eat oysters until you've had enough, which is the correct way to eat oysters.
What to expect
Counter seating or bar stools. No reservations. Arrive, sit, order. Happy hour runs daily and is worth knowing about. Cash preferred but cards accepted. Gets louder and more crowded on Friday and Saturday nights — arrive early if you want a stool and a quieter shuck session.
