Bob's
Train
The place
Bob's Train on Fruitville Road serves classic burgers and American lunch fare out of four restored Pullman train cars filled with circus memorabilia. It's quirky, it's local, and it's exactly the kind of place that disappears when no one talks about it.
Bob's Train is the kind of place that requires a sentence to describe and a minute to find online but is entirely worth knowing about. Four restored Pullman train cars on Tamiami Trail, painted up and filled with Sarasota circus memorabilia — which makes sense here because Sarasota was the winter home of Ringling Bros. Circus for decades, and that history runs through the whole north end of the city.
The food is classic American: burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, lunch fare that's made correctly without pretension. The prices are low. The setting is unlike anything else in the city. It's a place that's been doing its thing for years without needing a rebrand, which is a form of integrity.
What to expect
Walk in, order at the counter, find a seat in one of the train cars or outside. The burger is the standard order. Expect a diner vibe with a circus twist — the walls are covered in Ringling Bros. history. Cash and cards. Closes earlier than most — plan accordingly.
