Safe Harbor Seafood
The place
Safe Harbor operates the last remaining commercial offload dock in Mayport Village — the only place in Jacksonville where you can watch shrimp boats unload and eat what came off them the same day. Counter-order picnic tables, dock-side views, and JAXBest 2025 winner for Best Seafood.
Safe Harbor Seafood has been running a commercial seafood processing operation in Mayport Village since 1978. The restaurant side came later, in 2013 — but the dock came first, and the dock is still what defines it. Safe Harbor operates the sole remaining commercial offload dock in Mayport, the last one standing from a fleet of 150+ shrimping vessels that worked these waters at the industry's peak. When they advertise "from the boat to your plate," you can watch the proof from your table: the kitchen is within a few hundred feet of the dock where the boats unload.
The format is counter-service: you order at the window, find a picnic table outdoors, and watch pelicans on the pilings while shrimp boats come and go behind you. Styrofoam trays, no reservations, no pretense — which is precisely why it works. The blackened Mayport shrimp basket is the standout preparation, consistently praised for its crispy batter and properly cooked shrimp. The shrimp over Southern-style grit cakes is the house specialty for a more composed plate. The po'boy is the casual version. Stone crabs when in season.
Safe Harbor won JAXBest 2025 for Best Seafood in Jacksonville. The market side at 4371 Ocean St sells raw Mayport shrimp by the pound for home cooks. Weekends bring long waits — arrive before noon or budget 45+ minutes. Monday closed.
What to expect
Counter-order seafood on picnic tables with views of a working shrimp dock. Order at the window, find a seat outside, watch boats unload. Casual, utilitarian, and as dock-to-table as Jacksonville gets. Arrive early on weekends — the line builds fast and the best items sell out.
