Hands down the best brisket I've had in Jacksonville. The smoker is right in the dining room and the whiskey wall is no joke — I tried three pours I'd never seen on a menu before.
Mojo No. 4, Urban BBQ
Whiskey Bar
The place
Mojo No. 4, Urban BBQ Whiskey Bar is a barbecue restaurant in the Historic Avondale neighborhood of Jacksonville at 3572 St Johns Ave. Opened in April 2011, it is part of the Jacksonville-based Mojo BBQ family and runs an in-dining-room charcoal and wood smoker. The menu draws on North Carolina, Texas, and Memphis traditions and features pulled pork, brisket, ribs, burnt ends, Brunswick stew, and a BBQ Reuben. The bar carries one of the largest whiskey selections in Florida along with eight rotating beers on tap and craft cocktails. Hours are Sunday through Tuesday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Free street parking is available on St Johns Avenue. Takeout, delivery, catering, and OpenTable reservations are offered.
Tucked into a leafy stretch of St Johns Avenue in Historic Avondale, Mojo No. 4 is the urban whiskey-bar sibling of Jacksonville's homegrown Mojo BBQ family. The charcoal-and-wood smoker sits right in the dining room, so you smell the brisket before you sit down — and the bar behind it holds one of the deepest whiskey selections in Florida. It's been voted Jacksonville's best BBQ by FOLIO Weekly readers seven years running.
Order the slow-smoked brisket, the pulled pork, or a half-rack of ribs with Brunswick stew and collard greens. The burnt ends, Nashville hot chicken, and the BBQ Reuben have their own cult followings, the fried catfish has a gentle kick, and the fried pickles are a near-mandatory starter. Pair it all with a pour from the whiskey wall, a local tap beer, or one of the $6 happy-hour craft cocktails (4 to 7 p.m.).
Reservations are available on OpenTable and recommended on Friday and Saturday nights. Parking is free on the street along St Johns Avenue and the side blocks. Takeout, third-party delivery, and full-service catering are all offered, and the laid-back dining room is family- and group-friendly.
What to expect
Expect a casual, neighborhood whiskey-bar vibe with a working smoker in the dining room and the smell of oak and hickory throughout the building. Service is counter-friendly but full table service. Crowds build Friday and Saturday after 7 p.m. and during the 4–7 p.m. happy hour; lunch and early dinner are usually walk-in friendly. Plan on $20–$30 per person for a plate, side, and drink.

What people are saying
Came in for happy hour and stayed for dinner. Burnt ends, fried pickles, and a $6 old fashioned. Pulled pork was tender with great bark. Service was attentive without rushing.
Avondale gem. The BBQ Reuben is unique and excellent, ribs were fall-off-the-bone, and the Brunswick stew is the real deal. Parking on the street was easy on a Wednesday.
